Themba Zwane linked to FIFA World Cup match-fixing allegations

Bafana Bafana midfielder Themba Zwane has been linked to an international investigation into alleged betting irregularities at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, no evidence has been presented implicating the South African star in any wrongdoing.

The investigation centres on his red card during South Africa’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico in their opening match of the tournament. The incident was highlighted in a report by the Group of Copenhagen, an independent international network linked to the Council of Europe.

THEMBA ZWANE RED CARD UNDER SCRUTINY

The Mamelodi Sundowns superstar was sent off in the 84th minute. It was after a VAR review ruled that he had raised his arm against Mexico defender Roberto Alvarado.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee later upgraded the punishment to a three-match suspension. The ban effectively ended the Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder’s FIFA World Cup campaign after SAFA’s appeal was unsuccessful.

According to The Athletic, the Group of Copenhagen listed the incident as one of seven “yellow notices” linked to suspicious betting patterns during the tournament. Investigators are examining whether betting syndicates targeted specific in-game markets. These include player bookings and red cards.

The report also highlighted unusual betting activity on Cape Verde’s draw against Spain. It also pointed to an extended VAR review during Spain’s match against Saudi Arabia. As well as irregular betting on player suspension markets.

FIFA MAINTAINS THERE IS NO EVIDENCE

Despite the concerns raised by European investigators, FIFA insists there is no evidence that any 2026 FIFA World Cup match was manipulated.

Independent betting analyst Christian Kalb also urged caution. He said unusual betting patterns do not automatically indicate match-fixing. According to Kalb, such activity can often be explained by market movements or hedging strategies.

To date, no formal evidence has been made public linking Zwane, Bafana Bafana or SAFA to any match-fixing offence. The Group of Copenhagen estimates that global betting on the 2026 FIFA World Cup reached approximately $240 billion. It believes the enormous betting volume makes statistical anomalies more likely across the tournament’s 104 matches.
