Bafana Bafana have qualified for the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in South Africa’s history.

The national team secured the historic milestone after beating South Korea 1-0 in their Group A match at Monterrey Stadium in Guadalupe, Mexico, on Wednesday.

Thapelo Maseko scored the goal that sent South Africans into celebration mode.

By Thursday, supporters across the country were marking one of the biggest moments in Bafana’s World Cup journey.

The win has sparked an outpouring of national pride, with fans celebrating a result that takes South Africa beyond the group stage for the first time.

Maseko goal sparks celebrations

Maseko’s goal proved decisive in a tense match against South Korea.

After South Africa took the lead, the team had to hold on under pressure as the clock ran down.

Coach Hugo Broos said the final stages were filled with nerves.

“We scored that goal and then there was 20 minutes of heart beating and then hoping that the game should be finished,” Broos said.

He said reaching the second round was a historic achievement for the squad.

“We are in the second round, it was historical. I am very happy for the guys,” he said.

Broos praises players

Broos said the result was a reward for years of work with the national team.

“I have worked with them for five years already, and what we did in those five years is amazing,” he said.

The coach has been with the group through a long rebuilding process, and the qualification for the knockout stage marks a major breakthrough.

For the players, the victory is also a statement that South Africa can compete on the world stage.

The result gives Bafana a place among the teams still fighting for the trophy.

Government congratulates team

Government has congratulated Bafana Bafana for their determination, discipline and fighting spirit.

Government spokesperson William Baloyi said the team’s performance had lifted the country.

“The performance has inspired hope and excitement among South Africans at home and abroad, while showcasing the country’s football talent to the world,” Baloyi said.

For South African football fans, the win is more than just a result.

It is a moment of belief, pride and history for a team that has now taken Bafana Bafana into new World Cup territory.
