Rapper and businessman Jay-Z, and his wife and music superstar Beyoncé, took us behind the scenes of combing out Jay-Z’s eight-year-old wicks.

Wicks are a type of dreadlocks that are very thick, often resulting in less than 20 upright locks over the entire head.

Beyoncé narrated the seven-day process, captured in a video promoting her hair products line, Cecred.

“Jay told me a few months ago he was planning on combing out his locks for the Philly show with The Roots. He wanted to do this in honour of his father. His name was Adnis Reeves, and his favorite sports team was from Philly. His dad used to rock a fro, so he wanted to rock of fro in his honour,” started Beyoncé.

But there was a deeper reason for Jay-Z growing his hair in the first place.

“I thought it was always beautiful that the real reason Jay grew out his hair was to show Blue that her hair was like his hair…”

“Our daughter was about five, and she wasn’t feeling very confident about her hair at that time, when she told her father that it inspired Jay to grow out his hair. We really wanted her to love and embrace every inch of her gorgeous curls,” Beyoncé continued.

“I was pretty obsessed with Jay’s locks, honestly. I didn’t really want him to cut them.”

With the help of a few family members and hairstylists, the six-day takedown and seventh-day trim, wash and style was a success, the end result was an beautiful Afro, which the rapper showed off at the show.
