Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos is likely to adopt a more attacking approach after the disappointing 2-0 defeat to Mexico, where the Belgian set a grossly defensive team.

The match against Czechia will kick off at 18:00 local time. It will be staged at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with both sides facing a must-win encounter.

FIFA WORLD CUP: CZECHIA VS BAFANA BAFANA

The Europeans suffered a 2-1 loss to South Korea in their opener. South Africa were beaten 2-0 by Mexico, leaving both teams desperate for points to keep their knockout-stage hopes alive.

South Africa’s task has been made even tougher by the suspensions of Siphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane, who were both sent off against Mexico.

Meanwhile, Opta’s supercomputer gives Czechia a 54.9% chance of victory. The Europeans are also expected to rely on striker Patrik Schick and their aerial strength.

Additionally, Czechia is ranked 40th in the global FIFA men’s world rankings. The are 20 spots ahead of South Africa (Bafana Bafana), who sit at 60th

SOUTH AFRICA’S EXPECTED STARTING XI

Broos is tipped to freshen up his side by introducing more creativity in midfield and attack. Relebohile Mofokeng is expected to take up the attacking midfield role.

Goalkeeper: Ronwen Williams
Right Back: Khuliso Mudau
Central Defender: Olwethu Makhanya
Central Defender: Mbekezeli Mbokazi
Left Back: Aubrey Modiba
Central Midfielder: Teboho Mokoena
Central Midfielder: Thalente Mbatha
Attacking Midfielder: Relebohile Mofokeng
Left Winger: Oswin Appollis
Right Winger: Tshepang Moremi
Striker: Iqraam Rayners

ATTACKING CHANGES EXPECTED

After adopting an ultra-defensive approach against Mexico, Bafana Bafana are expected to play with greater intent in Atlanta. The inclusion of natural attacking Orlando Pirates trio such as Mofokeng, Appollis and Moremi should provide the creativity needed to unlock the Czech defence.

Elimination a real possibility for the loser. Thursday’s encounter is shaping up to be one of the most important matches of South Africa’s World Cup campaign.
