Dejected Magesi FC head coach Allan Freese says he is uncertain about his future at the relegated Limpopo-based outfit following the club’s drop to the Motsepe Foundation Championship
Speaking after Magesi’s crucial Betway Premiership Promotion/Relegation Play-Off match against Milford FC, which ended in a 1-1 draw and confirmed the club’s relegation, Freese admitted that he does not know whether he will remain in charge next season.
“I really don’t know if I will still have the job or not at Magesi because the management hasn’t said anything to me thus far,” said the visibly disappointed coach.
Freese officially joined Magesi FC on 21 February 2026 after taking over from Malawian mentor John Maduka, whose contract was terminated by the club.
Before Maduka’s appointment in July 2025, the team was coached by Owen Da Gama, who departed after his six-month contract expired in June 2025.
Freese has become the third coach to lead Dikwena tša Meetse within a 12-month period, and it remains unclear whether the 69-year-old mentor from Estcourt, KwaZulu-Natal, will continue in the role as the club prepares for life in the country’s second-tier league during the 2026/27 season.
Magesi finished the 2025/26 Betway Premiership campaign in 15th position, earning a place in the Promotion/Relegation Play-Offs alongside Motsepe Foundation Championship sides Cape Town City and Milford FC, who finished second and third respectively in the first division.
One of the club’s most passionate supporters, Mapogo Mokgohloa, popularly known as Mjereza, believes the relegation should serve as a valuable lesson and an opportunity for introspection
“It is the nature of football. If you don’t perform, you get punished. As much as I am heartbroken and shattered about this relegation, I am hopeful that the management will go back to the drawing board and fix where things didn’t go well so that the club can bounce back with full force,” said Mjereza.
Magesi FC communications manager Abel Rakoma declined to comment on the club’s relegation when approached by Africa Daily.
“Eish mchana, not today but next time,” said Rakoma, dressed in a brown suit and matching rounded sun hat as he stood on the pitch where the club’s fate had been sealed.
The most successful coach in Magesi’s history remains Clinton Larsen, who joined the club in 2023 and guided them to the 2023/24 National First Division title and promotion to the Premiership.
The 55-year-old also led Magesi to their historic 2024 Carling Knockout Cup triumph, defeating in the final.
However, Larsen’s tenure came to an abrupt end in December 2024 when he resigned live on television following Magesi’s 3-0 Carling Cup defeat to the All-Stars team.
