  • IDAC has dismissed rumours claiming that a J50 warrant of arrest has been issued for KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
  • The rumours sparked heated reactions on social media, with some South Africans threatening unrest similar to the 2021 riots that followed Jacob Zuma’s arrest.
  • IDAC says the misinformation is intended to distract law enforcement efforts and destabilise the country.

The Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) says rumours circulating about a J50 warrant of arrest for KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi are false and misleading.

“This information is false and dismissed with the contempt it deserves. These rumours are clearly intended to disrupt and distract the work of IDAC, as well as the responsibilities that Gen Mkhwanazi is discharging in the fight against crime,” said IDAC spokesperson Henry Mamothame.

Social media was abuzz over the weekend, with many South Africans vowing that if Mkhwanazi is arrested, unrest similar to the July 2021 looting that followed the arrest of former President Jacob Zuma would erupt again.

Some users went as far as saying they would take leave from work for that “special day.”

Many ordinary South Africans have placed Mkhwanazi on a pedestal following his July 2025 media briefing, during which he exposed alleged corruption and criminality within the country’s justice system.

That briefing later led to the establishment of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

The commission has since exposed alleged corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system, leading to the arrests of several senior officials, particularly within the police force.

Mamothame urged members of the public to remain vigilant against false information circulating on social media platforms, warning that such claims are aimed at destabilising and discrediting law enforcement agencies in the country.
