Nota Baloyi’s comments on Sonia Mbele spark national debate on parenting and support systems

Controversial music executive Nhlamulo Nota Baloyi is once again at the centre of social media discourse—this time following his remarks about actress Sonia Mbele and her parenting choices.

The debate was ignited after Sonia, best known for her role on Generations, opened up in a recent interview with the Ollah 7 podcast, about the realities of balancing a demanding acting career with raising children. In her candid reflection, Sonia credited her long-time house manager for playing a significant role in raising her children while she worked long hours on set.

“I trusted her completely,” Sonia said, highlighting the deep bond and reliance many working parents place on domestic support systems.

“Literally, Aunty Jennifer raised my children, and because you’ve been with somebody for that long, they raise your children. I even took her to a cooking school, Jennifer was a chef, she did a course for house management,” she said.

She added: “I was busy, I was on Generations working 12-hour days, and I needed somebody I could trust, and I needed somebody that I knew could cook for my kids. So Jennifer was a house manager, her own supervisor, she was a chef, you know, she did it all,” she added.

Nota responded to the interview with a critical social media post, labelling Sonia’s approach as irresponsible, and arguing that parents should be directly involved in raising their children.

Raise gour children because you’re an irresponsible mother… I would never say my maid raised me, she did her jib & took instructions from the woman raising me! pic.twitter.com/wgvniJB6YB

His comments quickly went viral, drawing sharp criticism from many South Africans who felt his remarks were insensitive and dismissive of the realities faced by working mothers—particularly in the entertainment industry.

The controversy has since evolved into a broader national conversation, with opinions sharply divided.

A South African could have done the same thing, that why her son is facing charges of rape. She was busy with foreigners instead of raising her son well.
