eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba was forced to leave Che Guevara Road in Durban as angry March and March Movement protesters surged towards him during escalating tensions outside the Department of Home Affairs.
The protesters had descended on the area demanding the removal of foreign nationals who have been living in a makeshift camp on the pavement for months.
Xaba attempted to engage at the scene, but tensions quickly escalated, with protesters rejecting his intervention and chasing him from the area.
Police and Metro Police reinforced their presence as confrontations intensified, with crowd-control measures deployed to separate protesters and foreign nationals.
The March and March Movement says it wants immigration laws and municipal by-laws enforced, while Xaba has previously said that the majority of those living at the site are legally documented.
