Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane admits second-place and CAF Champions League football is a ‘realistic’ target now for the 2022/23 season.
Chiefs are 22 points behind league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns after the 1-0 defeat at FNB Stadium but only six off second-placed Richards Bay.
And despite all the optimism that the season started with in which the club branded as the fresh revival of Amakhosi, the goal posts have now been slightly shifted.
“We really want to go play in the Champions League next season, I’ve tasted it when I was part of the team as the assistant coach two seasons ago,” Zwane said when asked if the club is aiming for continental football and Nedbank Cup.
“I want to go back there, I think it will help our boys to grow and players to know how it is to compete at that level because some of them have to represent the country at the international level.
“It’s equally important for us to participate at that level, so we will push for second spot and I think it’s realistic.
“And yes the team hasn’t won cups in many years, Nedbank we will give our best as well to make sure we go all the way and win it if we can.”
Chiefs, who have fallen into sixth place on the log, return to action on Sunday when they will host 10th-placed Royal AM at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
