Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane admits he’s pleased his side could grind a result to move level on points with Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United in the DStv Premiership.

Chiefs secured a 2-1 win at Dobsonville Stadium on Wednesday evening with Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana and Keagan Dolly scoring in the first half before the home side fought back with Waseem Isaacs netting in the second.

But Amakhosi, who spurned several chances, managed to secure a vital three points to move fifth, level on points with the Buccaneers and Matsatsansa – and five points behind league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

When asked by iDiski Times in the post-match press conference about the confidence it may give the squad going into their next fixtures against Stellenbosch, Chippa United and TS Galaxy, Zwane suggested winning points in a scrappy way may develop a more unified squad moving forward.

“There are no easy games, we’re going to Stellies next and they just beat Maritzburg United 3-0, so they are obviously oozing confidence and with us, we had a hard-fought maximum point [against Swallows],” he said after the game.

“It was very key for us to win today and as much as I don’t like to win scrappy because identity should be there, but first half there was a glimpse, you could see our structure, our set-up and I think maybe the game on Saturday took some energy from our boys which took its toll during the better part of the second half.

“It’s something we need to work on in terms of game management, so yeah, we’re left in the first round with the most difficult teams, Galaxy, Chippa – there are no easy games but at the end of the day, we needed this [win] and this will boost our confidence.

“Sometimes you’ll win them very scrappy but as long as you grind the results. It will build that chemistry that we’re looking for, it will build the confidence of the boys and – they will start believing in themselves even more.”

Chiefs will now travel to Cape Town to face the in-form Stellenbosch at the DHL Stadium – after there was a venue change due to the controversial scenes that occurred last month at the Danie Craven Stadium in their MTN8 quarter-final.
