Zwane – It’s Unacceptable For A Club Like Chiefs

After their 1-0 loss to Stellenbosch Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Arthur Zwane said that while it was a good game to watch, he was disappointed by how few clear-cut chances they created on Saturday.

Deano Van Rooyen scored the only goal of the game at the Danie Craven Stadium, to give Stellies the three points on the DStv Premiership table.

Speaking to the media after the game, Zwane in charge for the first time since Stuart Baxter departed said credit should go to Steve Barker for the job he is doing at Stellies.

“Ja, I think it was a very interesting game, a good game to watch,” Zwane said in the post-match press conference.

“And obviously playing against a team that are very good in counter attacks and also very comfortable on the ball at the back. I think coach, Steve Barker is doing a great job. And you could see  that flair ih their team.

“I don’t know what to say when it comes to the way we conceded the goal. Because I think we prepared for that, because we know that they’ve got very explosive players going forward. And that’s why we had to start with three at the back because we wanted to nullify that.

“But unfortunately, we conceded from a corner, we were a bit open and they managed to, to punish us and right after the first goal, they nearly scored the second one, more or less the same. But then we were forced now to push one of the central defenders to the middle to try and force them now not to play through the middle, maybe play wide, and then if it happens that they break in and then can easily recover.

“And second half, we had to make a few changes now to take the game to them. And as you could see, it was end-to-end stuff. They were still relying on their weapon, which is break attacks and counter-attacks. But think Siya and Njabulo, they were ready for that, and they did very well. And we had to bring in Baccus, and we left Cole so we wanted to have more attacking players on the field. And I think that’s when we looked better we looked like scoring.”

Zwane also insisted while his team showed some good signs, he felt they didn’t do enough in the final third.

“And unfortunately, we couldn’t create clear cut chances. We can say at least we’ve done our best. Yes, I think in the middle, we match them at some point,” he added.

“But when it comes to goalscoring opportunities, there’s not enough and it’s unacceptable. For a team of Kaizer Chiefs calibre, we need to create chances each and every game we play.

“So ja, looking forward to the next game, and it’s not going to be easy, because the games now are coming thick and fast. We’re playing Golden Arrows and also a very difficult team to play at home, but we will try and grind the results and keep on encouraging the boys.”
