Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane has explained why he decided to start Itumeleng Khune for a first time since taking over the reigns at the club and praised the goalkeeper for his showing.

Khune, 35, made his first Chiefs appearance since last season’s MTN8 quarter-final against Mamelodi Sundowns.

He helped Amakhosi to reach the semi-finals, saving two penalties in the shootout after the match had ended 1-1 after 120 minutes at a packed Danie Craven Stadium.

Zwane explained that Khune deserved his start and can offer so much to the team, when match fit.

“We needed to give Itu the opportunity because he’s been working very hard,” he told the club’s media department.

“I wanted him to show a little bit hunger and that desire because a fully fit Itu can give you a lot of things on the field. He can lead the team, he can inspire a lot of young players. If he becomes a good example than he makes our life easy.

“Fortunately today he came to the party after quite some time as well of not playing, but I think he showed his leadership skills and commitment. He led the team very well at the back, even though like I said we could’ve done better in some instances.

“I think if my memory serves me well, he kept us in the game, he made a very good save, even though apart from hitting the upright and the post, they didn’t have many clearcut chances.

“It’s good to have him back and we’re looking forward to see the Itu that showed the hunger. This is the Itu that I know, this is the Itu that I want to see going forward, not only for now but going forward because this is a team of youngsters. We have assembled a team of youngsters with a few senior members and Itu will play a prominent role for the boys to settle in quickly and be able assert themselves and show their talent and showcase themselves properly.

“We’re happy to see him back and we there for him as well, to help him to boost his confidence because we know how important he is for the club.”

Chiefs will find out their MTN8 semi-final opponents on Monday evening, when they will either be paired with Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns or AmaZulu.
