Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane has confirmed that Itumeleng Khune will be the club’s captain in the 2022/23 campaign and also discussed his potential replacements.

‘10111’ goes into his first campaign as Chiefs head coach and is overseeing a squad revamp, while man fans are expecting immediate results.

Zwane confirmed that Khune will remain the captain of the club, despite only playing a bit-part role in 2021/22, making just one appearance for Amakhosi.

“As things stand, Itu is the captain of the club,” Zwane told SuperSport TV.

“If Itu starts, he’s in the starting XI then he will definitely be the captain.

“If he’s maybe on the bench, or not part of the team on the day of the game then we will see who can lead the team.

“But I believe we have assembled a very good team with players who have leadership qualities.”

Khune already represented the club as captain at the 2022/23 season launch, but Zwane also listed Zitha Kwinika, Keagan Dolly, Khama Billiat and Yusuf Maart as potential replacements to wear the armband.

“When you look at a player like Zitha Macheke who has been part of the team from the development then we obviously had to let him go and he came back a different player with more experience. So he has those leadership qualities and he was the captain at Stellenbosch.

“You look at a player like Keagan Dolly, you look at Khama, you look at Yusuf Maart, you look at many other players you can mention. The list is long of players who have those leadership skills.

“We are not worried about that because we will definitely have someone [as captain] if Itu is not available.”
