Bongani Zungu has defended his return to Mamelodi Sundowns and insists he never ‘failed’ in Europe.

Zungu, who turned 30 last month, rejoined Sundowns in the off-season after six seasons in Europe where he turned out for Vitória Guimarães, Amiens and Rangers.

However, after the expiry of his contract with the French club, he opted for a return to South Africa which has been met with a mixed reception.

“Nothing went wrong, I made a decision with my family to come back to South Africa, there were personal reasons why I had to come back,” Zungu explained.

“I don’t have regrets about my career, like anything in life, you have ups and downs, that’s what happened to me. I’m not the last person to face similar situations.

“But me coming back doesn’t mean something went wrong, or I failed, people can say whatever, I’m happy. I come from nothing, I worked hard to play in Europe and I came back because of personal reasons, that’s all – not about failing.”

The South Africa international midfielder who’s been eased into the Masandawana set-up after arriving out of shape feels anyone would have made the same decision, had they been in his shoes.

“I’m happy, my family is proud of me, I’m proud of myself. Now I’m at Sundowns, there’s no looking back, I have to try to help the team reach even greater heights.”

“It’s got nothing to do with football, it’s life, family and I just made a decision that’s all, there’s not anything else, maybe you thinking about contracts or…

“There’s no football reasons, just personal, it’s really personal, if you were me, you would 100% [feel the same], it’s personal.”
