AmaZulu president Sandile Zungu has defended his decision to rope in Bongani Khamulo as part of the panellists that are perusing CVs for positions within the club, saying “he is staying in touch with the game” on SuperSport TV.
After this publication revealed recently that former Bafana captain Khumalo was roped in to help Usuthu when it comes to put the structure in terms of recruitment, fans and former Usuthu players were up in arms that he doesn’t have the required experience for such.
Khumalo was hands on in recruiting coach Pablo Franco Martin, who was appointed on three-year deal and arrived in Durban on Thursday night.
Usuthu are also still on the hunt for a team manager, a general manager, a team scout, a technical director and communications manager. This after Zungu decided not to renew the contracts of Qedi Dlamini (team manager), Ayanda Mkhize (team scout) and Tshepiso Mofokeng, who was the general manager, following the disappointing campaign last term.
Zungu said a few weeks ago that he is interested in appointing the technical director and iDiski Times has been informed that Sudesh Singh was interviewed a few days ago for the same post.
“We liked Bongani Khumalo,” explained Zungu.
“He’s in touch with the analysis of the game, he is a commentator. He is someone that we trust. His integrity is well-respected even though he has never worked for Usuthu.
“But we asked him to help us and he agreed and said AmaZulu are the club I like, I can help. But we could have taken anyone.”
Recently, Zungu was seen having a cosy coffee with former Africa Cup of Nations winner, Mark Fish in Durban.
That fuelled talks that he might be roped in to work within Usuthu structures since the club has not filled many positions that are vacant in the side.
“Right now, I speak to players who were part of the 1996 AFCON, the squad of the late Clive Barker,” added Zungu.
“They are so many of them. They are in my speed dial. But I won’t ask many people’s opinion, but it will be a few.

“Because I’m going to be asked from time to time why you brought in Reneilwe Letsholonyane? Why Mbulelo Mabizela? Why Andile Cele?
“These are questions I can’t answer because there are so many players who played for AmaZulu [that are looking for employment].
“Some will be happy when decisions are made and they come right. But from now on let’s not talk bad about others because they are close to us.”
