South African rapper, actor and activist Zuluboy has returned with Freedom, a new Mandela Day anthem that marks his first release in two years.

The song, released to coincide with Mandela Day on 18 July, celebrates the values of unity, resilience and hope inspired by Nelson Mandela’s enduring legacy.

On Mandela Day, people around the world honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela through acts of service and community upliftment. As reported by SA Hip Hop Mag, the new track reflects the values of unity, compassion and resilience that Madiba championed throughout his life.

Taking to Instagram to introduce the single, Zuluboy said, “Something’s cooking! We took Maskhandi Hip Hop all the way to New York City.”

A meaningful return to music

Known for using his music to address social issues, Zuluboy’s latest release signals more than just the end of a musical hiatus. The anthem serves as a reminder of the power of music to inspire positive change while encouraging listeners to embrace the spirit of giving back.

Rather than focusing solely on entertainment, the song delivers an uplifting message that aligns with the annual call for South Africans to dedicate 67 minutes of their time to helping others in honour of Mandela’s 67 years of public service.

Why the release matters

The timing of the release is particularly significant as Mandela Day continues to inspire campaigns, concerts and community initiatives both in South Africa and abroad. This year’s celebrations once again place the spotlight on unity, volunteerism and social impact through the arts.

For fans, the anthem offers a welcome return from one of South Africa’s respected voices in hip hop. It also reinforces the role artists can play in preserving Mandela’s legacy by using their platforms to promote hope, empathy and nation-building.

As South Africans prepare to commemorate Mandela Day, Zuluboy’s comeback provides an inspiring soundtrack that encourages reflection, kindness and collective action; values that remain as relevant today as ever.
