The State has opposed bail for Uzuzole Goqwana, one of the accused in the murder of former boxing champion Zolani ‘Last Born’ Tete. The investigating detective told the court that he should remain behind bars because he is allegedly dangerous and could interfere with evidence.

Uzuzole is the first applicant in the bail proceedings. The State’s concerns reportedly include allegations that he could interfere with witnesses if released on bail.
Court hears alleged witness interference
During the bail proceedings, the court heard allegations that Uzuzole’s mother had also allegedly attempted to make contact with a witness in the murder investigation.
According to the evidence presented in court, Uzuzole’s mother contacted the witness and asked to meet face-to-face.
The meeting ultimately did not take place. However, it was alleged that she subsequently sent the witness a message asking what they intended to say in court. The witness reportedly told the court that the encounter left them feeling unsafe.
The State’s concerns about potential interference form part of its opposition to Uzuzole being released on bail.

Uzuzole Goqwana arrested at King Phalo Airport
The court also heard that Uzuzole was arrested at King Phalo Airport while he was allegedly preparing to travel to Johannesburg.
The circumstances surrounding his arrest were presented as part of the State’s case against his bail application.
It also emerged during the proceedings that the fake registration number on the motor vehicle allegedly used by the suspects on the night Zolani was killed was allegedly obtained with the assistance of Sinebongo Qase, who is the fourth accused in the case and the second applicant in the current bail proceedings.
The evidence forms part of the State’s efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged murder and the roles of the accused.
Bail hearing postponed
The bail proceedings have been postponed to Monday, 7 September 2026, when the court is expected to hear further evidence.
The State is expected to continue presenting evidence in support of its opposition to the bail applications.
The allegations against Uzuzole, Sinebongo and the other accused have not been tested in a criminal trial. All the accused remain presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
Zolani’s murder has sent shockwaves through South Africa’s boxing community, with the former world champion’s death prompting widespread tributes.
The bail proceedings are expected to provide further details about the State’s case as the court considers whether the accused should be released pending the outcome of the criminal matter.
