Zizi Kodwa resigns from Parliament

Zizi Kodwa, the former Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, has quit his job as an ANC member of parliament.

His return to parliament caused anger among civic groups and alliance partners like Cosatu.

This was because he came back just weeks after being charged with corruption and stepping down as a minister.

Cosatu’s president said this move went against the ANC’s promise of renewal.

Kodwa is accused of taking a bribe from former EOH executive Jehan Mackay.

The bribe, disguised as a soft loan, was allegedly meant to influence an IT tender with the City of Johannesburg when Kodwa was the ANC’s national spokesperson.

Kodwa wrote a resignation letter to ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, also sending copies to ANC Chief Whip Mdumiseni Ntuli and Speaker of the National Assembly Thoko Didiza. In the letter, dated 24 July, he wrote:

“I hereby wish to inform the organisation and Parliament of my immediate resignation as a Member of Parliament due to personal reasons,” Kodwa wrote.

“I would like to thank the ANC for the privilege and honour to serve the nation as a public representative.”

The ANC confirmed Kodwa’s resignation.
