Zimbabwe National Shutdown Protesting Mnangagwa’s Constitutional Amendment Sees Partial Disruption

A national shutdown in Zimbabwe on Friday, 31 July 2026, drew a mixed response as quieter streets, lower school attendance and reduced activity were reported in Harare and other major centres, while many businesses and public transport continued operating.

The shutdown, backed by the People’s Coalition, targeted the constitutional changes signed into law by President Emmerson Mnangagwa earlier in July. Those changes extend presidential and parliamentary terms from five to seven years, postpone the next general election to 2030, and modify the process for electing the president

The coalition described the action as a peaceful success, citing reduced movement and a heavy police presence. However, the government dismissed the shutdown as a failure, saying business continued as normal and planned protests did not materialise.

The coalition says it will continue challenging the constitutional changes through legal and civic action.
