A Zimbabwean lower-tier league club has confirmed that they have parted ways with a revered ex-Orlando Pirates forward, who was their head coach.

Golden Eagles FC relieved Gilbert Mushangazhike from his role as coach despite a decent start to the season.

Gilbert Mushangazhike had presided over six matches in the Northern Region Division One league.

Eagles FC picked ten points from a possible 18 and are five points behind leaders Ngezi Platinum Under-19 in the Zimbabwean lower-tier league.

And having played bridesmaids to Simba Bhora last season, the club leadership is not pleased by how the team has fared. They are sixth on the log standings.

Consequently, they opted to part ways with the ex-Orlando Pirates forward, who took reigns following Joel Lupahla’s departure last year.

The Harare based club released a statement on Monday confirming the departure of Gilbert Mushangazhike, who played in the PSL.

“Golden Eagles Football Club would like to officially announce the departure of head coach Gilbert Mushangazhike by mutual consent.

“The club expresses it’s gratitude to coach Mushangazhike for his hard work, dedication and contribution to the team during his tenure in charge and wishes him well in his future endeavors.

“Assistant Mark Mathe will take over as interim head coach. He will lead the team in the upcoming crucial assignments against Chinhoyi Stars and MWOS FC. The club is committed to supporting him and the team,” reads the club statement.

Mushangazhike leaves club after their 0-0 draw with Banket Mine on Sunday in Harare.

His best achievement was winning the Axis Cup in Zimbabwe last season when they beat Simba Bhora.

At that point, Mushangazhike appeared to have retained the club’s faith heading into the current season. But it was not to be.

Stewart Murisa, formerly with Bidvest Wits is the only former PSL Star remaining in that league.

Ex-Mamelodi Sundowns star Cuthbert Malajila and his CUMA Academy, were relegated to division two.
