Zandile Gumede is confident that the corruption charges against her will be dropped. The former eThekwini mayor was re-elected as the African National Congress (ANC) eThekiwni region chairperson. Thabani Nyawose, her opponent, was defeated.
Gumede received 210 votes, while Nyawose received 181 votes. Gumede won the election despite having to step down due to the corruption case against her.
Due to the step-aside rule, she stayed at home during the conference. Gumede claims to be a member of Parliament who serves the community. She stated that she is waiting for ‘real charges.’
“They said let me just pause for a second so that the society can see that the law is taking its course and as a leader, I must be seen to be complying. Other than that I’m quite confident that it’s not going to be long, I’m going to be off the hook and me and my team are going to be working very hard,” she said.
According to SABC News, Nyawose has conceded defeat. He stated that he will give his full support to the newly elected ANC provincial leadership.
Nyawose sees nothing wrong with Gumede standing for election. He believes she has the right to do so as an ANC member.
“She (Gumede) has already respected the step aside rule because the step aside rule does not prevent her to avail herself if she is nominated. The majority of ANC members or branches in eThekwini believe in her leadership. All of us have to accept that she is our leader and she is going to lead us in the next three years,” said Nyawose.
Zandile Gumede, the embattled former mayor, has been elected as the ANC eThekwini Regional Chairperson. Gumede defeated her opponent, eThekwini council speaker Thabani Nyawose, at the weekend’s hotly contested regional conference held at the Durban ICC.
The conference was adjourned earlier on Sunday due to a disagreement over whether “regional task team leaders” should be allowed to vote. There was also a disagreement about the inclusion of 13 delegates from the ANC Women’s League.
Due to the ANC’s step aside rule, Gumede was unable to attend the conference. She did, however, accept her nomination for the position in her absence. Gumede is accused of corruption, fraud, and money laundering in connection with an R430 million Durban Solid Waste (DSW) tender. Her trial is scheduled to begin in July.
