The late Zahara is one of the nominees for the South African Afro Music Awards, which will be held on 26 October at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni.

Zahara has been nominated for two awards: Best Afro Album of Democracy and Best Female Afro Soul Artist of Democracy.

She is up against artists like Zonke, Siphokazi, Judith, Moneoa, and Thandiswa Mazwai.

Event organiser China Mpololo told TshisaLIVE that the awards aim to celebrate South African talent and reflect on the history of Afro music as the country marks 30 years of democracy.

“We are working hard with our team to make this one of the biggest awards in the country, celebrating our local talent. This is the fifth edition of the South African Afro Music Awards,” Mpololo said.

“As we celebrate 30 years of democracy, we will remember the history of Afro music and honour the legacy of artists, legends, and icons.”

Industry legends Chicco Twala, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Lindelani Mkhize, Mandisa Dlanga, Thapelo Khomo, and Sam Mhangwani will receive lifetime achievement awards.

Mpho Xaba, the fiancé of the late Zahara, shared that he is still paying off her R820,000 hospital bill, without any support from her family.

Zahara, whose real name was Bulelwa Mkutukana, passed away at 36 on 11 December 2023 due to liver problems after spending nearly three weeks in a private hospital in Johannesburg.

The award-winning singer and songwriter was laid to rest in the Eastern Cape on 23 December.
