‘You Can’t Win Formula 1 With A Fiat 500’

Ernst Middendorp has insisted people need to be realistic about Swallows survival hopes, saying you cannot win Formula 1 with a Fiat 500.

Middendorp was announced as new Swallows coach just before Christmas but lost his first two games in charge.

However, those two matches were against third-placed Richards Bay and leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

After the 2-0 defeat to Masandawana, the German tactician was asked if he realises the amount of work he’s faced with to help Swallows stay up and admitted it’s not an easy task – in particular due to the club’s transfer ban.

“It’s a bit of a difficult situation. I think Mosa did a good job and before Dylan Kerr, too,” he told reporters.

“There is a number of players they struggle, they came in with injuries. Not ready in terms of fully recovered, a certain setup we tried to bring based on the resources we have and that’s always something.

“You cannot put something in and play shoeshine [attractive] soccer when you don’t have the resources. You cannot go with a Fiat 500 and you want to win Formula One.

“It’s not possible. Stick to your resources, to what you have and then develop it.”

Middendorp, though, who is known for unearthing talent in South Africa, revealed he will look at the club’s reserve side for new players and also insisted the relegation fight will not be decided in January or February.

“I saw in our Diski team side, I saw this morning, there are two-three figured out. We have some other players now on the bench with Ian Makaringe and other guys,” he added.

“We have to bring them in, we have to bring them close to help ourselves, in particular now, everyone knows the FIFA ban.

“But good, we make something out of it. It will not be decided in January, in February. The position where we are in the end of the season will come in the last matches in May.”
