Wydad Coach: Ahly Were Like Liverpool

Wydad Atheltic Club head coach Walid Regragui has compared their CAF Champions League triumph victory over Al Ahly to that of Liverpool’s defeat to Real Madrid.

Regragui masterminded a 2-0 win over Ahly at the Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca to end their hopes and Mosimane’s, of securing a third consecutive Champions League crown.

In what was marred by controversy over the venue during the build-up of the fixture, the electrifying atmosphere played its role to perfection as the 46-year-old lifted his first continental title in his debut season with Wydad – which marked their third crown after the 1992 and 2017 success.

“It’s not easy to beat Al Ahly in the Champions League finale. But we did everything on the pitch and we deserved to win. I am happy to win my first continental title,” Regragui said, as per Yallakora.

“The CAF Champions League is more difficult than its Asian counterpart, here you play against Al Ahly, Raja, and many more strong teams. Today we were like Real Madrid while Al Ahly were like Liverpool. We gave up ball possession but we defended well and got what we wanted.

“My players fought well and did everything they could. They deserved to win the title. Al Ahly is like Real Madrid in Africa, they know how to win the finals. We watched the UEFA Champions League final and we saw what Liverpool did wrong to avoid making the same mistakes.”

WAC will now turn their attention to the Botola Pro where they hold a four-point lead over rivals Raja Atheltic Club with six games remaining.
