Africa – Scientists are working to save the nearly extinct Northern White Rhino. Only two remain, and both are females who cannot carry a foetus. Led by Professor Thomas Hildebrandt, scientists have created 33 embryos using frozen sperm and eggs, and plan to use Southern White Rhino mothers as surrogates to carry these embryos. If the plan succeeds, baby Northern White Rhinos could be born soon. However, more funding is needed to continue this project. Some scientists believe it may be too late to save the species and suggest focusing on animals with a better chance of survival.
US – Former president Donald Trump, 78, has stated that he does not plan to run for president again in 2028 if he loses the election in November. In an interview, Trump said: “No, I don’t see that at all.” This marks the second time Trump has mentioned the possibility of losing, despite usually focusing on winning. Democratic candidate Kamala Harris is currently leading in national polls and has raised more money than Trump, although Trump is still seen as stronger on issues like the economy and immigration.
Hezbollah – The Israeli military is heavily bombing Hezbollah targets in Lebanon and has warned civilians to leave the area. These are the largest strikes since the war in Gaza began, and Israel may even send in ground troops. Both Israel and Hezbollah have exchanged heavy fire, with Hezbollah attacking Israel more intensely than in recent years. Simultaneously, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu is considering a plan to relocate Palestinians from northern Gaza to pressure Hamas into releasing hostages.
US – Janet Jackson’s team has denied reports that she apologised for her comments about Kamala Harris’ race. An individual named Mo Elmasri, who falsely claimed to be Janet’s manager, issued an apology, but Janet’s team clarified that this was unauthorised. Janet’s actual manager is her brother, Randy Jackson. The confusion started when Janet mistakenly said Kamala Harris’ father was white, when he is actually from Jamaica and her mother is from India. Janet’s team confirmed that Elmasri does not represent her, and his apology was not from Janet.
