Nigeria – Protests broke out in several Nigerian cities on Thursday as people expressed anger over worsening inflation and poor governance. In the northern states of Yobe and Kano, the protests led to a 24-hour curfew after looting and vehicle fires. In Kano, protesters looted a Digital Innovation Park. In Abuja and Niger state, police used tear gas and gunfire to break up the crowds, with at least six people feared dead in Niger. Police arrested 11 armed individuals. In Kaduna state, three people were killed.

US – American rapper Cardi B announced she is expecting her third child just a day after filing for divorce from Offset. The couple, who married in 2017, have a daughter, Kulture, 6, and a son, Wave, 2. Despite their rocky relationship, the split seems friendly. A representative for Cardi said the divorce wasn’t because of cheating rumours. A friend mentioned that Cardi is calm, focused on her kids, and excited about the new baby. Cardi’s next album is set to be released this year.

Russia – Three Americans freed from Russian prisons in a major exchange deal have returned to the US. Journalists Evan Gershkovich and Alsu Kurmasheva and ex-marine Paul Whelan were part of a deal involving 24 people, marking the largest prisoner exchange between Russia and the West since the Cold War. They were welcomed at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland by their families and President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris.

Iran – Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh will be buried on Friday in Qatar after his assassination. US President Joe Biden said the assassination had hurt ceasefire efforts, while Iran promised revenge for Haniyeh’s killing in Tehran. This incident is the third high-profile assassination in recent weeks of key leaders of militant groups backed by Iran. Hezbollah launched rockets at northern Israel after its leader promised revenge for an Israeli attack in southern Beirut that killed a top Hezbollah commander.
