US – Mariah Carey confirmed that both her mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison, passed away on the same day over the weekend. In an emotional statement, the Grammy-winning singer shared her sadness and appreciation for the time she spent with her mother before she passed. Although Mariah had a difficult relationship with her mother and sister, she kept in touch with them over the years. The causes of their deaths have not been disclosed.
Burkina Faso – At least 100 villagers and soldiers were killed in central Burkina Faso during a weekend attack by militants linked to al-Qaida. The attack happened in Barsalogho commune, where villagers were helping security forces dig trenches to defend against jihadi attacks. The al-Qaida-affiliated JNIM group claimed responsibility, saying they had taken control of a militia position in the town of Kaya. Burkina Faso’s government responded with ground and air attacks, but the exact number of casualties is unknown. The country is facing increasing violence from jihadi groups, with thousands killed and millions displaced.
Russia – Russia launched another wave of missile and drone attacks on Ukraine following one of the largest air strikes of the war. Early on Tuesday, Ukrainian monitors detected hypersonic missiles, triggering air raid alerts across the country. Russia’s defence ministry said the attacks targeted power stations and infrastructure in cities like Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv, and Odesa. At least three people were killed in the latest attacks, and more deaths were reported from earlier strikes. Many areas are now facing power outages and water supply problems.
Japan – Japan has accused China of violating its airspace after a Chinese Y-9 reconnaissance aircraft briefly flew into Japanese airspace near the Danjo Islands in the East China Sea on Monday. This is the first time Japan has made such an accusation against China. The Japanese Defence Ministry released a map showing the plane’s path and said fighter jets were sent in response, but there was no confrontation. Japan’s Foreign Ministry has strongly protested to China’s embassy in Tokyo. This incident has further strained the already tense relations between the two countries.
