Malawi – Extreme heat in Karonga, northern Malawi, is causing bananas to ripen too quickly, leading to big losses. Farmer Emily Nkhana and other farmers have started turning overripe bananas into banana wine. The women of the Twitule Cooperative Group now make this sweet wine by mixing bananas with sugar, yeast, water, raisins, and lemons. This new business has helped them cope with the challenges of climate change, like rising water levels and excessive heat, and has become a source of income.
Tennessee – Rock star Jon Bon Jovi, 62, helped save a woman who was about to jump off the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge in Nashville. He was setting up for a music video when he saw the woman on the edge above the Cumberland River. He spoke to her and, with the help of another person, brought her to safety.
US – Taylor Swift made history at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards by winning seven awards, including Video of the Year. This makes her the most awarded solo artist in VMA history, with 30 wins, beating Beyoncé’s record of 25. The show, hosted by Megan Thee Stallion, celebrated 40 years of the VMAs and was dominated by women. Sabrina Carpenter won Song of the Year for Espresso, and South African artist Tyla won Best Afrobeats for Water.
Mars – The European Space Agency (ESA) has found a “smiley face” pattern on Mars made from ancient salt deposits. These salt deposits suggest that Mars once had water, including rivers, lakes, and oceans. The smiley pattern is part of a study looking at about 1,000 similar spots. Scientists believe these areas may have once supported life and are now key locations to explore.
