Paris – French police are investigating death threats made against three Israeli athletes at the Olympic Games. They are also looking into the release of the athletes’ personal information on social media. An Israeli investigation found that Iranian hackers sent the threats and leaked the data. During Israel’s football match against Paraguay, the Israeli anthem was booed, and a “Genocide Olympics” banner and Palestinian flags were displayed. Those fans were removed. Israeli athletes are under heavy protection, supported by Israel’s Shin Bet.

Ethiopia – Landslides in southern Ethiopia’s Gofa Zone have killed over 250 people, and the death toll could reach 500, according to the UN. Thousands of people have been affected, making these the deadliest landslides in Ethiopia’s history. The UN’s OCHA added the need to quickly evacuate high-risk people, including over 1,300 children under five and more than 5,200 pregnant and breastfeeding women. The Ethiopian government is finalising an evacuation plan. Last year, 43 people died from floods and landslides in Ethiopia.

Alaska – Three members of the Grammy-nominated gospel group The Nelons; Kelly Nelon Clark, Jason Nelon Clark, and Amber Nelon Kistler; died in a plane crash on Friday. The crash also killed Amber’s husband, Nathan Kistler; their assistant, Melodi Hodges; and the pilot, Larry Haynie along with his wife, Melissa. The group was on their way to perform at the Gaither Homecoming Cruise to Alaska when their plane crashed near Gillette, Wyoming. Kelly’s younger daughter, Autumn Nelon Streetman, was not on the plane. The crash caused a veldfire. An autopilot issue is being investigated as the possible cause.

Venezuela – Both Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his opponents claimed victory in Monday’s presidential election. The United States and several other countries are sceptical of the official results. The National Electoral Council (CNE) reported Maduro leading with over 51% of the vote, while opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia had more than 44%. However, opposition leader María Corina Machado said their records showed González with 70% of the vote and Maduro with 30%. The opposition promised to defend their version of the results and accused the government of breaking election rules. If confirmed, this would be Maduro’s third term, continuing the “Chavismo” era that began in 1999.
