Mali – The Ukrainian military intelligence agency claims it was involved in helping rebel fighters attack a group of Russian fighters from the Wagner mercenary group near the Algerian border, killing many. The Tuareg rebels and al-Qaeda affiliate JNIM said they killed 50 Russians and several Malian soldiers. Unofficial Russian sources reported up to 80 Russians killed. The Mali government requested Russia’s help in 2020 to fight the rebels in the country’s north.

India – Landslides in Kerala, India, have killed at least 43 people. Rescue operations are underway. The landslides injured about 100 people and affected around 1,000. At least 250 people have been rescued, but heavy rain, fallen trees and debris are making it difficult. The army is helping 250 stranded villagers after a bridge collapsed. Helicopters have been sent out, but bad weather and power outages are causing more problems.

Greece – Greece has banned the movement and slaughter of goats and sheep nationwide to fight an outbreak of “goat plague”. The PPR virus can kill up to 70% of infected animals. About 7,000 animals have been slaughtered in Thessaly, with another 1,200 to be killed soon. The agriculture ministry is following EU protocols to stop the spread of the disease.

Venezuela – Venezuelans protested across the country after a disputed election, clashing with police over fraud allegations. The government-controlled electoral body said Nicolás Maduro was the winner, but the opposition rejected the results. Many young opposition supporters said they would leave the country if Maduro stayed in power.
