Mexico – Ismael Zambada, leader of the Sinaloa cartel and known as “El Mayo”, was arrested by US federal agents in El Paso, Texas. Zambada, 76, co-founded the cartel with Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. Guzman’s son, Joaquin Guzman Lopez, was also arrested. Zambada is charged with making and selling fentanyl, a drug linked to the US opioid crisis. He also faces charges for drug trafficking, murder, kidnapping, money laundering and organised crime. US Attorney General Merrick Garland said the Justice Department is serious about punishing cartel leaders.

United Kingdom – Prince Harry says it is still dangerous to take his wife, Meghan Markle, back to the UK. In the ITV documentary Tabloids on Trial, Harry, 39, pointed at media scrutiny and potential threats from people influenced by negative press. After leaving royal duties in 2020 and moving to the US, Harry and Markle lost their security detail. Harry has asked the UK government for more protection when visiting. Despite challenges, he wants to return to the UK to see family and friends, and support his charities.

Ethiopia – Landslides in southern Ethiopia’s Gofa Zone have killed over 250 people, with the death toll possibly reaching 500, according to the UN. The landslides, which happened on Sunday and Monday, are the deadliest in Ethiopia’s history. The UN’s humanitarian agency Ocha said there is an urgent need to evacuate affected people, including young children and pregnant women. The government is working on an evacuation plan. Last year 43 people died because of similar disasters in the region.

Panama Coastal – Ten migrants drowned while crossing a flooded river in the Darién Gap near Panama’s coastal community of Carreto, according to Panama’s National Border Service. The nationalities and exact timing of the incident were not released. The case is under investigation, with suspicions that organised criminals guided the migrants through unauthorised crossings. The Darién Gap is a dangerous route connecting Colombia and Panama, used by migrants trying to reach the US and Canada. Panama has recently taken steps to restrict illegal crossings, including putting up barbed wire on several routes.
