Las Vegas – President Joe Biden cancelled a speech in Las Vegas because he contracted Covid-19. He has mild symptoms and is isolating at home in Delaware, where he is still working. Biden feels “good” and is taking Paxlovid. Biden has said he would only consider dropping out of the presidential race if a doctor advised it.
Germany – Adele announced she will take a “big break” from music after her current concerts and has no plans for new music. Adele found the shows emotionally draining and wanted to try other creative things during her break. She misses her life before fame and recently stood up to a homophobic heckler at one of her Las Vegas shows. After two years of shows in Las Vegas, she will perform in Munich next month.
Gambia – Gambia’s parliament voted to keep a law banning female genital mutilation (FGM), rejecting a push by religious groups to withdraw the law. This means Gambia won’t be the first country to re-legalise FGM after banning it. The ban, in place since 2015, includes penalties like fines and prison. Despite some opposition, human rights groups like Amnesty International supported keeping the ban. In 2020, 73% of Gambian women aged 15-49 had experienced FGM.
USA – Angelina Jolie asked Brad Pitt to drop his $67-million (R1.2-billion) lawsuit over their shared winery, Château Miraval. Jolie’s lawyer said Pitt controls all their shared properties but still wants more. The fight started when Jolie sold her shares, which Pitt said broke their agreement. Jolie said Pitt refused to buy her shares unless she signed a wider Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) covering his alleged bad behaviour. Pitt’s lawyers denied this, saying Jolie asked for the broader NDA. This comes as Jolie reportedly gained favour with their children in the ongoing dispute.
