New Zealand – A homeless charity in Auckland accidentally gave out pineapple-flavoured sweets with dangerous amounts of methamphetamine, which someone had donated. The New Zealand Drug Foundation said each sweet had up to 300 times the average amount of meth that drug users take. After three people were hospitalised, the charity began contacting 400 people to get the sweets back. Authorities believe the meth-laced sweets were part of a smuggling operation that went wrong. So far, 16 sweets have been recovered.
India – Thousands of doctors across India are on strike after a trainee doctor was raped and murdered in Kolkata. Her body was found at a medical college, and one suspect has been arrested. Medical groups are asking doctors in government hospitals to stop non-urgent services and are calling for quicker legal action and better protection for health workers. Protests have been held across the country. The Indian Medical Association wants an investigation into the working conditions of doctors and the murder case.
Sudan – Sudan is facing a serious humanitarian crisis due to ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary rebel Rapid Support Forces. The United Nations says the country is at a “breaking point”, with over eight million people displaced, many of them children. A refugee camp in Darfur has been declared in famine, and millions more are at risk of severe food shortages.
US – Democrat Ilhan Omar won her Congressional primary in Minnesota despite challenges from former Minneapolis city council member Don Samuels. Her victory follows the primary defeats of fellow “Squad” members Cori Bush and Jamaal Bowman. Bush lost to St Louis County prosecutor Wesley Bell, who was backed by a pro-Israel group. Westchester County Executive George Latimer defeated Bowman in a race heavily funded by AIPAC’s United Democracy Project PAC
