Florida – The FBI is investigating an assassination attempt on Donald Trump after Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was arrested with an assault rifle at Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach. A Secret Service agent spotted a rifle barrel near a fence while Trump was playing golf. The suspect fled but was later arrested. Authorities found an AK-47-style assault rifle, two backpacks, and a GoPro. It is still unclear if any shots were fired.
Nigeria – Heavy flooding in Nigeria’s Borno state caused 274 inmates to escape from a prison. The flood damaged parts of the prison and staff housing. Of the 281 inmates who tried to escape during a transfer, seven have been caught. Authorities have the identities and biometrics of the escapees and are searching for them. Flooding across Nigeria has killed 229 people and displaced over 386,000, with northern Nigeria hit hardest. Climate change is exacerbating extreme rainfall. Floods have even washed animals from a zoo into nearby communities.
US – Tito Jackson, a founding member of The Jackson 5 and brother of Michael Jackson, has died at age 70. Tito played guitar and sang backing vocals in the iconic group known for hits like “ABC” and “I Want You Back.” The Jackson 5, formed in 1964, sold over 150 million records and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Tito had been touring with his brothers before his passing. He is survived by his family, who said in a statement: “It will forever be ‘Tito Time’ for us.”
France – At least eight people died trying to cross the English Channel from France on Saturday night. A boat with 59 migrants hit rocks and got stuck near Ambleteuse. Rescue teams saved 53 people, including a baby, but eight died, and six were taken to hospital. The migrants were from countries such as Eritrea, Sudan, and Syria. The boat broke apart after setting off from near Vimont in the Normandy region. This comes just two weeks after 12 people died in a similar tragedy.
