Israel – The Palestinian health ministry has announced that an Israeli airstrike in the West Bank killed 18 people. Israel claims it killed a Hezbollah commander involved in an attack in the Golan Heights, although this remains unconfirmed. Israel has increased airstrikes in Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah leaders, with the intensity comparable to the early Gaza bombings last year. Thousands of people are fleeing to Syria. The US military believes that Israel has not yet decided how to respond to Iran’s recent missile attack on an Israeli air base.
Ghana – Protests in Accra are calling for the release of 53 activists who were arrested during an anti-illegal mining protest. Oliver Mawuse Barker Vormawor and 11 others will remain in custody until 8 October. Oliver is reportedly unwell, but protests are set to continue until Saturday. The demonstrators are campaigning against illegal mining, known as “galamsey,” which is severely damaging Ghana’s water sources, farmland, and forests. Social media users are showing support using the hashtags “#FreeTheCitizens” and “#SayNoToGalamsey.”
UK – Oxford University is developing OvarianVax, a vaccine aimed at preventing ovarian cancer. The vaccine trains the body to fight early-stage cancer cells and may function similarly to the HPV vaccine, which has successfully reduced cervical cancer cases. The NHS could potentially offer this vaccine to prevent cancer, particularly for women with BRCA gene mutations, who are at a higher risk of ovarian cancer. Currently, many of these women opt to have their ovaries removed to reduce their cancer risk, but the vaccine could offer an alternative. Cancer Research UK is funding a three-year study led by Professor Ahmed Ahmed, with clinical trials expected to begin soon.
