Congo – A failed jailbreak at Makala Central Prison in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s biggest and most overcrowded prison, left at least 129 people dead, mainly from a stampede. The incident happened early on Monday, with gunfire starting around midnight. Authorities said 24 inmates were shot by “warning” gunfire, while 59 others were injured, and some women were reportedly raped. The prison, built for 1,500 people, now holds over 12,000. The government is investigating and plans to reduce overcrowding by releasing some inmates and building a new jail.
US – Former President Donald Trump said on The Lex Fridman Podcast that he would release more files about Jeffrey Epstein, including Epstein’s “client list”, if he becomes president again. Trump, 78, stressed that he never visited Epstein’s private island, where high-profile people had sex with underage girls. He called Epstein – who was found dead in his jail cell in 2019 from suicide – a “good salesman”.
US – A pizzeria in northern New Jersey has turned Tesla Cybertrucks into mobile pizza ovens, creating a new food truck experience. The trucks use the vehicle’s power to run ovens that cook pizzas in two minutes. Fabio Antonio Arbelaez, a partner at Montville’s Columbia Inn Restaurant, says this is the first setup like this in the US.
England – Prince Harry reportedly does not want to return to royal duties unless his brother, Prince William, apologises. However, he might take a temporary role in the royal family if his father, King Charles, asks him. This comes after news that Harry has distanced himself from his Hollywood team and contacted former friends about possibly returning to the UK. Sources say Harry and Meghan are not looking to return to royal life permanently, and Prince William has said Harry is not welcome back after the release of his book Spare.
