Colleen Makhubela, the founder and president of the South African Rainbow Alliance (Sara), has left it to join the Umkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP).
As Sara’s leader, Makhubela strongly supported women’s rights and campaigned for women to lead political parties to challenge male dominance.
She said this was one of the main reasons she had previously left Cope, the ANC splinter party, where women weren’t given leadership roles.
Makhubela is joining MKP, a party with only one woman on the National Executive Committee: Deputy Secretary Nombuso Mkhize.
In her resignation letter, Makhubela said: “I’ve decided to join MKP, led by President Jacob Zuma. This is the party that will guide South Africa into the future, bringing about positive change in African society. Today, I stand with the brave and fearless members of MKP.”
Makhubela said she is ready to take bold steps and make sacrifices.
“My goal is to unite everyone who loves this country, young and old, and lead our youth to trust in South Africa’s future. MKP must be recognised as a serious political organisation.
“Joining MKP will only strengthen the work we started in Sara. I will continue to uphold the values and ethics that brought us together.”
