Dimakatso Tjege from Daveyton in Ekurhuleni is lucky to be alive after her boyfriend tried to burn her and her two children to death after he allegedly decided to end his life.

This was after Tjege decided to end their four-year relationship and refused to sign the ownership of her two cars and house over to him.

It is alleged the suspect arrived at the victim’s home in Daveyton armed with three litres of petrol and a bomb used by zama zamas to break rocks.

The suspect forced access into the house, locked Tjege and her two children inside and emptied the petrol containers on the furniture before setting the house alight.

Fortunately, Tjege’s neighbours saw the flames and broke down a door so Tjege and her children could escape.

In an interview with Scrolla.Africa Tjege said her ex-boyfriend owed Basotho illegal miners and wanted to use her assets to pay his debt.

“He demanded that I sign everything I owned to him and record audio confirming that he owns the assets, as the zama zamas wanted proof.

“I refused, but he kidnapped me and took me to an illegal mine dump behind Bramfischerville in Joburg, where eight Basotho nationals were waiting for us.

“He told me that if I refused to record the audio, the men would take turns raping me.

“Fortunately, I managed to flee through the open veld, and it was dark, so I managed to get away,” she said.

“He tried to burn me alive twice before, and throughout the relationship, I was forced to sleep with one eye open.”

The suspect, who has been on the run since the incident three weeks ago, was arrested by the police last Thursday while travelling to Bushbuckridge.

He appeared in the Daveyton Magistrate’s Court to face charges of attempted murder, arson, and possession and pointing of an illegal firearm.

He is in custody and the matter was postponed to 10 September for a formal bail application.
