The legal fight over Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s estate has reached a crucial phase.
The court has given her grandson, Zondwa Mandela, seven days to advance his case.
If he fails to do so, he risks having the matter thrown out entirely.
The dispute forms part of a long-running battle over the estate of the late anti-apartheid icon.
Madikizela-Mandela died in April 2018.
Her estate has since become the subject of court action involving members of the Mandela family.
Grandson faces court deadline
Zondwa Mandela has been fighting to be involved in decisions around his grandmother’s estate.
The case centres on the administration of the estate and who should have authority over it.
Earlier court reports said Zondwa argued that he and his siblings had a direct interest in the estate after the death of their mother, Zindzi Mandela.
He claimed they were entitled to a share of Madikizela-Mandela’s estate through Zindzi.
The latest court development now puts pressure on him to move the case forward.
If he does not act within the court’s timeframe, his application could be dismissed.
Zenani affidavit accepted
The dispute has also involved Madikizela-Mandela’s daughter, Zenani Mandela-Dlamini.
Earlier this year, the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg allowed Mandela-Dlamini to submit her affidavit in the case.
That made her affidavit part of the legal record in the estate dispute.
Previous reports said Zondwa challenged moves linked to Mandela-Dlamini’s role in the estate.
He had argued that his side should also be involved in decisions about the estate.
Family dispute continues
The battle has highlighted deep tensions around one of South Africa’s most recognisable political families.
At the centre of the dispute is the handling of Madikizela-Mandela’s assets and the role different family members should play.
The court’s latest deadline now marks an important moment in the case.
For Zondwa Mandela, the next step is urgent.
He must advance his case within seven days or risk losing his chance to continue the legal fight over his grandmother’s estate.
