Mamelodi Sundown goalkeeper Ronwen Williams broke the clean sheet record of legendary Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs.

Williams’ kept his 18th clean sheet of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership campaign in Sundowns’ 2-0 win over Marumo Gallants at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday evening.

The 31-year-old has now broken Josephs’ record from the 2009/10 season, when he kept 17 clean sheets for Pirates.

“Very proud of Ronza, very proud of the team,” Mokwena said after the match.

“As I always say it’s a reflection of the contribution of everybody. It’s a team performance, it’s a team record and [I’m] very proud of the team and everybody at the football club.”

He has one more game – home fixture against Maritzburg United – to add onto his new record.

Overall, Sundowns have kept 19 clean sheets this season, but Kennedy Mweene was in between the sticks in the 2-0 win over Sekhukhune United in January.

Williams only joined the Masandawana ahead of the current season and was brought in to help the club reach another level after they had secured their fifth successive DStv Premiership title and a domestic treble in 2021/22.

The Bafana Bafana captain has been part of a record-breaking campaign so far, helping Downs to win the league title with seven games to spare.

They are also still chasing the big fish – the second star in the CAF Champions League – and will face defending champions Wydad Athletic Club in the semi-final.

Before Williams’ joined Downs, he had spent all his career at SuperSport United, making his debut for the club on 25 October 2011 during Gavin Hunt’s first spell.
