Why South African musician DJ Sumbody was killed

DJ Sumbody’s death traced to missing drug stash and ruthless underworld fallout

The murder of popular music producer and nightlife entrepreneur DJ Sumbody, born Oupa Sefoka, has been tied to a long-brewing underworld conflict linked to a lost drug consignment that reportedly vanished while in police hands in KwaZulu-Natal.

Sefoka and his two bodyguards were killed in a hail of bullets in November 2022, shortly after a performance at News Cafe in Woodmead.

Authorities recently arrested four men in connection with the hit, including businessman Katiso “KT” Molefe.

According to sources close to the case, the trouble began when drugs believed to have gone missing resurfaced in Johannesburg’s club scene, prompting the original owners, a feared syndicate known only as “The Big Five,” to launch a violent crackdown.

Sefoka, who was expanding his Ayepyep brand to Cape Town, was allegedly approached to facilitate a meeting.

“His role was to get a Cape Town businessman to meet with these guys,” said an associate.

“It was not clear at the time if he knew the business to be discussed involved drugs.”

That meeting reportedly triggered a chain of events that saw Sefoka added to a hit list over fears he had learned too much.

Despite being described as someone uninterested in crime, the decision to eliminate him was made. He had reportedly packed to leave Johannesburg the day he was killed.

The feud has also been linked to other violent attacks and deaths within the entertainment industry.
