Tensions are growing between King Misuzulu kaZwelithini and Inkosi Sifiso Shinga, chairperson of the House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders in KwaZulu-Natal.
Their relationship has soured so much that King Misuzulu wants Shinga removed from his position and replaced by former Ingonyama Trust Board chairperson Inkosi Thanduyise Mzimela.
The conflict started earlier this year when Shinga allegedly sided with ANC leaders in their dispute with King Misuzulu over Ingonyama Trust land.
Shinga is accused of blocking traditional leaders, especially those from the South Coast, from attending a meeting called by the King in Ulundi to discuss protecting Zulu land from government interference.
Shinga angered the King after reportedly skipping the meeting.
At the recent 40th anniversary of the Reed Dance at eNyokeni Royal Palace in Nongoma, the King did not acknowledge Shinga, who was also banned from speaking at the event.
This was the first time the provincial House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders chairperson was not given a chance to speak at such an important Zulu ceremony.
In the past, previous chairpersons of the provincial House of Traditional Leaders, such as Inkosi Bhekisisa Bhengu, Inkosi Mpiyezintombi Mzimela, and Inkosi Phathisizwe Chiliza, were always included in royal ceremonies.
Shinga had also enjoyed this privilege until his alleged fallout with the King this year.
Prince Simphiwe Zulu, the King’s spokesperson, denied rumours that Shinga’s exclusion was due to the fallout.
He said that Shinga wasn’t given a platform because of time constraints.
“He also didn’t speak at the first leg of the Reed Dance in Ingwavuma. We had discussed this with him, and he agreed. His Majesty wanted fewer speeches and to focus on the celebration,” said Prince Simphiwe.
