Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye has revealed he is shocked that neither Kaizer Chiefs nor Orlando Pirates will sign Junior Mendieta.
Khanye says this after SABC Sport reported that the Stellenbosch FC midfielder is “in talks” with DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
This publication confirmed that Mendieta is keen on a new challenge, with his release clause set at R10 million.
The Argentine has enjoyed a good season in the Winelands, scoring 10 goals and making nine assists in 31 appearances across all competitions, helping Stellenbosch finish in the top eight and reach the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup.
Khanye says signings like Mendieta will ensure that Sundowns will remain dominant, because it will create more competition within their squad, but reduce the competition in the league.
“Look at the South American players they have brought in the likes of Sirino, Allende, Saavedra. Sundowns don’t just identify players, especially an international that doesn’t have a spark,” Khanye said on iDiski TV.
“So good identification for Mamelodi Sundowns but I was looking at either Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates will sign that guy so that there is some competition in the DStv Premiership.
“But if they are going to let Mendieta go to Sundowns what does that tell you? It tells you that there will be competition within Mamelodi Sundowns and the more there is competition at Sundowns nobody will stop them.
“I’m very, very shocked to see Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates letting that player go.”
