Kaizer Chiefs still have plenty to address ahead of the 2026/27 season despite showing signs of progress under their new head coach.
Amakhosi wrapped up their pre-season tour of Spain with a 2-1 defeat to Elche on Saturday after falling 2-0 behind before Asanele Velebayi pulled one back late on.
The result means Chiefs finished their Spanish tour without a victory, having previously drawn against Scottish side Rangers FC and Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Kholood.
Why Kaizer Chiefs should be worried
Against Elche, Chiefs fielded what was close to their strongest available starting XI, yet they were comfortably second best for long periods.
With the exception of Luke Baartman and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, the line-up largely resembled the side that finished third in the Betway Premiership last season.
While pre-season results should not be overemphasised, the performance exposed familiar weaknesses that could prove costly once the competitive campaign begins.
Defensively, Kaizer Chiefs conceded twice and at times struggled to cope with Elche’s movement and intensity. There is reason for optimism, however, as new signings Thabo Moloisane and Bradley Cross did not start and are both expected to become regular starters, which could strengthen the backline.
Going forward remains the bigger concern. Amakhosi once again lacked a cutting edge in the final third and created few clear-cut opportunities.
If they are to challenge for honours this season, adding another proven attacking option before the transfer window closes could be a priority.
One of the positives from the tour has been striker Flávio Silva, who has continued to find the back of the net and appears capable of leading the attack.
Kaizer Chiefs return to SA
Chiefs will now return to South Africa, where they will turn their focus to the Toyota Cup. They face Zimbabwean outfit Scottland FC at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace on Sunday, 26 July, with kick-off scheduled for 15:00.
