A manhunt is underway in Utah after US political commentator Charlie Kirk was shot dead during a campus event. Authorities confirmed they believe the killing was a targeted attack.

CHARLIE KIRK PRONOUNCED DEAD

Charlie Kirk, 31, spoke at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, 10 September. Shots rang out about 20 minutes into his appearance. He was rushed to the hospital but pronounced dead hours later.

“This shooting is still an active investigation,” the Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) said. “There is an ongoing investigation and manhunt for the shooter.”

Two people were initially taken into custody but later released; neither had links to the shooting, according to People.

GUNMAN AT LARGE

Police now describe the gunman as wearing all-black tactical clothing, with a helmet, mask, long gun, and possibly aviator-style glasses.

Witnesses reported the fatal shot came from the roof of the university’s Losee Centre, about 200 yards from the scene.

UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ON EDGE

“This is a tragic moment for Utah and our country,” DPS said. Utah Governor Spencer Cox went further, calling it “a political assassination.”

The university suspended all classes and events until Sunday, 14 September.

“Our hearts go out to his family,” Utah Valley University stated. The institution is supporting students, staff, and faculty after calling the incident “an unspeakable tragedy.”

WHO WAS CHARLIE KIRK?

Charlie Kirk, founder of the conservative non-profit Turning Point USA, had been hosting his “American Comeback Tour.”

Known for his outspoken political views, he often split opinion on college campuses. His ‘Prove Me Wrong’ debates drew both supporters and critics.

Former Miss Arizona USA Erika Frantzve, along with their three-year-old daughter and one-year-old son, survive him.

FBI ASSIST IN FINDING THE CHARLIE KIRK SHOOTER

The FBI, Utah County Sheriff’s Office, and local police are assisting in the wide-scale investigation. Police have secured the crime scenes, and forensic teams continue their work.

Authorities have not yet confirmed a motive. “This unspeakable attack is disturbing and frightening,” the university added.
