For the past few years, South Africa has developed a culture of cancelling scandalous celebrities, however, Matthew Booth who recently made headlines seems to be immune.
This week the soccer star has been trending following cheating allegations made by his wife. We were all made to understand that Booth has been cheating on his wife with a married woman named Bongangi Möller-Mthombeni.
Social media quickly went to call for the former Bafana Bafana player to be cancelled but all calls fell on deaf ears. In fact, his employer, SuperSport and sponsors for his initiatives took no action against him.
To make it worse City Press reports that SuperSport has decided to stick with Booth. The sport channel said in an interview that what’s happening to the Booths is “a private matter” and they will respect their right to privacy.
This quickly became news with some concluding that this is due to “white privilege”.
South Africans compared the backlash received by TV personality Katlego Maboe from his employer and how he was removed from campaigns he was working on over a “private matter” after cheating and abuse allegations were levelled against him by his ex-partner and child’s mother, Monique Muller.
Katlego hosted SABC 3’s morning show Expresso and appeared in numerous Outsurance commercials. He lost everything when companies cut ties with him due to the cheating allegations.
The presenter has since returned to Expresso and he’s also presenting Tropika Island of Treasure. This hasn’t been the case with Matthew Booth.
One Twitter user questioned why Booth had not been cancelled. “I know it may be too soon. But can we have a chat around the white male privilege of Matthew Booth being exhibited by the SuperSport decision. Katlego Maboe was lynched by these companies and smeared to the brink of poverty for a ‘private’ matter,” the person wrote.

Katlego Maboe was lynched by these companies and smeared to the brink of poverty for a ‘private’ matter.
While some in the comments section questioned the same thing, others pointed out that Katlego Maboe was also accused of abuse, whereas Booth is only accused of cheating.
“It’s a private matter” because Mathew Booth is white. Katlego Maboe was cancelled in a day for cheating and a week for abuse allegations. Katlego is black man who had a private matter too.
Katlego Maboe was smeared by these companies almost to the brink of poverty for a very “private matter” But bo Matthew Booth are excused and we are told its a “private matter” while he blatantly protects Bongani Moller. Sies pic.twitter.com/SZaF5v1okj
White privilege at it best, @OUTsurance quickly rushed to deal with Katlego because he is black. @SuperSportTV is distancing itself from Booth matter because he’s white. If he was black they were going to deal with it differently. In SA black lives dont matter, being white matter pic.twitter.com/WnWeire7qj
You say black people cancelled Katlego, but back people don’t control the economy? Comparing a sports channel to an insurance and lifestyle show is bizzare . BM must be exempted from abuse bcs they are black, but YT cant? Booth is YT and you support him, why? Confusing theories https://t.co/ctk40g4Gbw
