Where is Orlando Pirates’ defensive rock stalwart Thabiso Sesane?

Thabiso Sesane was a rock at the back for Orlando Pirates last season. Is the talented centre back’s return on the horizon?

The 25-year-old won’t be rushed back after a lengthy injury layoff.

However, a return isn’t far off.

What did Orlando Pirates say?

“Thabiso Sesane and Selaelo Rasebotja continue to recover after suffering knocks during the latter half of the previous campaign,” the Buccaneers confirmed.

Thabiso Sesane started the 2024-2025 campaign in domineering form, becoming a pillar in the heart of their defence. It was, therefore, a massive blow to the club and player when he was cruelly struck down with a serious tendon injury in February. The rupture was deemed bad enough for the 25-year-old to undergo surgery. Full recovery could take anywhere between four and six months. If Sesane’s rehabilitation continues going smoothly, he could be back in training after the international break and eyeing a return in October.

Will Orlando Pirates’ skipper get his place back in the side?

Makgopa and Mabasa impress at the other end for Orlando Pirates

Pirates duo Evidence Makgopa and Tshegofatso Mabasa are not struggling in front of goal. Both players were on the score sheet for the Buccaneers as they claimed a routine 2-0 win over TS Galaxy. Makgopa struck with a 20th-minute penalty while Mabasa added the finishing touches deep into second-half stoppage time. Makgopa’s now got a goal and three assists in the Betway Premiership this season, reinforcing his overall importance to the cause. After playing a cameo role for most of the season, including a match-winning brace off the bench in the MTN8 final, 24-year-old winger Tshepang Moremi got a deserved start in the league. The Buccaneers claimed a workmanlike 2-0 win over Galaxy. Pirates face Siwelele next in the first round of the Telkom Knockout. That match kicks off at 15:00 on Saturday, 4 October.
