When Saleng was ‘moments away’ from joining Kaizer Chiefs

Monnapule Saleng’s every move seemed to go under the microscope at one stage. Remember when he almost joined Kaizer Chiefs before Pirates?

Saleng could have joined Kaizer Chiefs

An Amakhosi supporter as a boy, Saleng explained in the Sowetan back in 2022 via SABC Sport: “I should have played for Chiefs because there was a scout from the club who was following me at Free State Stars.

“I don’t know what happened. But in the end, I ended up playing for Pirates… after Chiefs delayed signing me.”

The mercurial winger spent a spell on loan with Orbit College, notching up two goals and three assists in 11 league outings before sealing a much-talked-about permanent switch to Sundowns in January this year.

Kaizer Chiefs can still have a say in the title race

The Glamour Boys have emerged as genuine title contenders for Orlando Pirates. If they can win all of these fixtures, they’ll keep themselves in contention as we reach the business end of the campaign.

  • Wed 18 Feb: Siwelele vs Chiefs (19:30)
  • Tue 24 Feb: Chiefs vs Stellenbosch (19:30)
  • Sat 28 Feb: Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates (FNB Stadium, 15:30)

What about Orlando Pirates?

Pirates remain in pole position to claim their first league crown since 2012 after a Relebohile Mofokeng-inspired win over AmaZulu. However, to say the remainder of February could be make or break for their title ambitions is an understatement. Here’s what’s ahead in the month of love, including matches against defending champions Sundowns and surprise title rivals Kaizer Chiefs:

  • Sat, 14 Feb: Pirates vs Gallants, 15:30
  • Wed, 18 Feb: Pirates vs Sundowns, 19:30
  • Sat, 28 Feb: Chiefs vs Pirates, 15:30
