WhatsApp, one of the world’s most popular social media apps with 2 billion users, is making changes.

It announced that it will no longer work on smartphones using Android 4.0 or older versions.

This change will take effect on October 24, 2023.

On the flip side, WhatsApp will continue to support iPhones with iOS 12 and newer.

Before shutting down support, WhatsApp plans to send notifications in advance to let people know if their devices will be affected.

The reason for this change, according to WhatsApp, is to keep up with the latest technology and focus their resources on supporting the newest operating systems.

If you want to continue using WhatsApp, here’s what your smartphone needs:

  • For Android phones, it should have OS 4.1 or newer.
  • For iPhones, you need iOS 12 or later.
  • For phones with KaiOS, version 2.5.0 or above is required. This includes JioPhone and JioPhone 2.

Unfortunately, some smartphones will lose WhatsApp support, including models like HTC One, Sony Xperia Z, LG Optimus G Pro, Samsung Galaxy S2, Samsung Galaxy Nexus, HTC Sensation, Motorola Droid Razr, Sony Xperia S2, and more.

To check your phone’s operating system:

  • On Android, go to Phone Settings > About phone > Software information. If it’s Android 4.0 or below, you’ll need to update or face discontinuation.
  • On iOS, navigate to general settings and select the About option to view your current iOS version.

In addition to these changes, WhatsApp has introduced a new feature called Channels for users in South Africa. This tool allows one-way broadcasting for users who want to keep others informed.
