A family from Mdlankomo location in Libode near Port St Johns in the Eastern Cape want to know what led to the death of 28-year-old Sibongile Mtshakaza, who was found seriously injured in an unfenced quarry and died the following day.

The family say they were first told he jumped into the quarry and later that he was beaten and pushed in by security guards.

SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli said a security guard handed an injured Sibongile over to the police on 18 September for allegedly being involved in a burglary.

He was taken to hospital where he died on 19 September. An inquest docket was opened for further investigation.

The family’s troubles don’t end there. They buried Sibongile’s mother in August, leaving Sibongile with his sick sister, Sibonisiwe.

Sibonisiwe, a mother of two, has severe heart problems that were diagnosed in 2022.

“The doctors told me I had a blood clot in my heart, and now my heart has become so damaged that it no longer pumps blood,” she said.

“My illness has resulted in blood not flowing to my feet, and my feet have dried up. I no longer wear shoes; my toes are chipping off. Whenever I wear shoes, bits and pieces of toes will be left in the shoe.”

Sibonisiwe will get her first social grant in October but she has debt from medical costs.

Their aunt, Neliswa Mtshakaza, pleaded: “We have no means to bury him, no one is employed here. We are pleading with anyone who can assist to donate whatever they can,

so we can put my nephew to rest.”
